The need for qualified social service professionals is increasing. The demand for skilled social work professionals with the appropriate licensure and education is at an unprecedented level. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) reported that “Employment for social workers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations.”

To give you an idea of the demand for social workers, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs employs more than 10,000 professional social workers. The Red Cross estimates that more than 40% of its disaster mental health volunteers are professional social workers. The master of social work has become the standard professional degree for licensure and career advancement. Upon completion of an MSW program, graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensure exam to become licensed social work practitioners. Earning a master of social work online is a great way to advance your career and make a positive impact on society without the need for relocation.

There are more than 100 online social work programs in the United States, so to come up with our list of the top 50, we looked at only those programs with accreditation through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). We included programs that offer an online MSW with limited residency requirements. We then ranked each school using the points system below to come up with our top 50 online master of social work programs. Specialized practice information was sourced from the CSWE website, while student/faculty ratio and average graduate tuition rates were sourced from College Navigator.
